Standing Together: Seven Ways to Support Those Affected by Federal Layoffs

The federal workforce has recently faced unprecedented reductions, notably within the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). The Trump administration has initiated significant layoffs, reducing USAID's workforce from over 10,000 to approximately 300 employees, effectively dismantling the agency and disrupting global humanitarian programs. Additionally, the IRS is drafting plans to cut up to half its 90,000-person workforce, raising concerns about the agency's ability to function effectively.

As professionals who value principles and community, it's imperative for those of us still employed to extend our support to affected individuals. Here are seven ways we can make a meaningful impact:

1. Open Lines of Communication

Reach out to your affected friends or family members. A simple message acknowledging their situation and offering your support can go a long way. Some may desire assistance, while others may prefer space; allowing them to lead the next steps respects their individual needs.

2. Ask About Their Future Plans

Before offering assistance, inquire about their career aspirations. Understanding their goals ensures that your support aligns with their desired direction. For example, instead of making unsolicited introductions, ask, "What do you want to do next?" or "How can I support your career objectives?"

3. Offer Genuine Support with Résumés and LinkedIn Profiles

If you have the expertise and time, assist them in refining their résumé or LinkedIn profile. However, avoid making empty promises if you're unable to follow through. Alternatively, share your résumé as a template or provide actionable tips, such as highlighting measurable achievements or tailoring their résumé to specific job descriptions.

4. Help Identify Target Organizations

Collaborate to create a list of companies they're interested in. Review this list to see if you or your network have connections within these organizations, facilitating meaningful introductions. This targeted approach is more effective than suggesting a broad review of your LinkedIn connections.

5. Follow Through on Promised Introductions

Only offer introductions you can genuinely facilitate and commit to following up. Unfulfilled promises can add to their stress. Ensure the person you're connecting them with is available and willing to help, respecting everyone's time and expectations.

6. Be Present During Highs and Lows

Support them throughout their job search journey, not just during celebratory moments. Acknowledge setbacks with empathy and encouragement, reinforcing your unwavering support. For instance, sending a thoughtful note or small gesture during challenging times can make a significant difference.

7. Stay Informed and Advocate

Keep abreast of developments related to the layoffs and advocate for fair treatment and support for affected employees. Collective awareness and action can lead to more substantial support systems and policies.

In addition, participate in support groups where affected individuals can share experiences, resources, and job leads. A strong community provides emotional support and practical assistance during transitions.
